For me, every design starts with an inspiration piece! For my patio makeover, it was this beautiful stencil by cutting edge stencils. When I first saw it I knew it was the one to make all my patio dreams come true. When I reached out to Cutting Edge Stencils and asked to collaborate with them, they said yes! They quickly sent me 2 stencils and a brush set. Steve and I could hardly wait to get started. The quality of the stencils was amazing. They precision-cut there stencils using lasers, they are easy to clean and can be reused over and over again!

I wanted my backyard to have a bit of a Southern California coastal vibe and that starts with picking the right colors. Here are the colors I choose. The gray and gray-blue with the contrast of the brown and ivory really made this design unique and pop. If you followed along in my Instagram stories you would have seen how I sample painted a couple of different variations until I found the right pattern. Remember to always sample your colors to be sure you are not wasting your time and money.

Just by adding the base coat it already transformed the look of the concrete. Honestly, every back patio could use a quick coat of this to give a new clean look.

Now its time for the magic to begin. I use a chalk line to plan out our “rug” area. That did take a bit of math because the porch was not a perfect square. So I had to adjust to be sure our design would be evenly lined up.

Next up was prepping to stencil. I placed the paint on paper plates for easy cleanup. I also used some leftover packing paper to dab off excess paint from my brushes. and of course, because I was sitting on concrete I grabbed an old towel to sit on.

I was very adventurous going for a 4 color design. It was a lot more work than I expected. Also, the patio paint dried quickly so I was having issues with the paint drying out. The paint was also thicker than I imagined and it bled through the stencil a bit. I defiantly think if we kept it to just 2 colors I would have completed the project quicker and I would have a larger rug lol!

But with all that said we love how it turned out. If you are new to DIY-ing this is the project and product for you! Head to Cutting Edge Stencils now to pick out your next project!
