Hi, friends! Welcome back to Social With Lisa!
I am so happy you are here, and I hope you have decided to pursue your dreams and start your very own decor account! I’m so proud of you; this is super exciting! You can do this – I wholeheartedly believe in you. Never hesitate to reach out if you have questions or are overwhelmed. I’ve been through it and can help you along the way.
Picking Your Account:
Now that you’ve decided to leap into the Instagram decor world, you need to pick what type of account you want to be! It’s sort of like your “genre.” Basically, there are 3 different types of accounts you can choose from. In my opinion, a personal account is the best. That’s the type of account I have to grow my own home décor brand. If you don’t like the idea of a personal account – you can be an inspirational account where you use other people’s content to build a following on Instagram. Not only are you benefitting yourself and increasing your Instagram growth, you’re also benefitting other accounts and their growth. It’s a win win! Don’t love options 1 or 2? The third account option would be to create a fun and catchy name like
“ILOVEDECOR” – these accounts do very well also, and tend to grow a little bit more quickly because the audience is more intrigued. With all of this being said, take some time to think about which account is more YOU and which option speaks to you most. Is it just for fun like a hobby? Are you wanting to grow a business where you’ll share your passion through your content?
Since I wanted to build a personal brand, I chose to use my name – Lisa Herland. Let’s dive right in to how this kind of account works! The basis of my account is home decor, but I always wanted this to turn into a business. I’m not sure when or what type of business, but I knew that this was going to be a business, so it was extremely important to me to use my name. I didn’t want to fun cheesy name when someone clicked on my page. I wanted them to know exactly where they were going – to Lisa Herland’s page.
The Pros:
One of the pros of a personal business account
is that I can be anything I want to be. I can be Lisa Herland who sells real estate. I can be Lisa Herland who offers E- design. Or I could be a little bit of both! I knew that I could go so many different ways once I found my
niche. It’s taking me a little bit longer to get there because of all the moving we’ve done in the last two years! Six moves to be specific! However, choosing a page focused on home decor has given me lots of flexibility which has been great.
The Cons:
The cons of having an own brand page? It can take a lot longer to grow. Since most people on IG don’t know me personally, they might be uninterested at first and ask questions like “who is Lisa Herland, and what is she doing?” Though my page is home decor, my name doesn’t immediately show that – so it is taking me a bit to build my brand. That being said, I personally feel like it’s worth it because I have been able to grow organic friendships and engage with my followers on social media. I feel like they know who I am even though we haven’t met in real life! Whether you’re starting a home decor, health, fitness, cooking page, keep in mind it will take time! And also remember that it’s okay! Hard work pays off in the end.
Time to talk about the accounts with a fun and catchy name like “lovehomedecor.” This IG name is immediately recognizable to your followers. They know what this page will be when they click on it and are expecting what they see in the name because it’s apparent! These types of accounts – the clearer ones that catch people’s attention – tend to grow a bit quicker than personal accounts do.
Next – inspiration accounts! Like accounts with catchy names, inspiration accounts also tend to grow quicker. However, if this is the type of account you want to start, prepare yourself to put lots of work into it! For example, you’re going to have to post at least once a day. I’ve seen inspiration account holders post 3-4 times per day, 7 days a week! Now that’s a lot of work! But don’t be discouraged because, with inspiration accounts, you’re able to grab posts from other accounts so you don’t have to take your own photos. Consistency is key for an inspiration account to grow. Create a beautiful feed with inspiration from your niche and you’re already headed for success. For instance, a home décor inspiration account would require sharing beautiful pictures of homes, rooms, and decor you love that’s not your own. Always remember to credit the photographer and designer so you don’t get into trouble. I recommend always ask permission when using someone else’s photo since they own the rights.
I want to give you an example of how a personal brand differs from an inspiration account. Farah Merhi has a personal decor page and also has a fantastic inspiration called ‘Inspire Me Home Décor.’ Many of us home decor accounts admire her accounts and her originality. Her personal page has about 650,000 followers, but her inspirational page has about 5.9 million followers! You can definitely see the difference in the numbers there, right?
In Conclusion…
So… which type of account seems to be most your style? It might seem overwhelming, but with so many great options to choose from, you can’t go wrong! That’s the way I look at it. Pick your account type, brainstorm a username, and find your niche because it’s time to start your very own home decor Instagram account!
Remember, the only thing getting in the way of beginning your new journey is self doubt and fear. Trust me, I know it can be scary to start a new social media journey, but it’s so rewarding along the way!
