Behind the Scenes of Instagram with Lisa and Steve Herland
Since Steve has become an integral part of my social media thanks to COVID, we thought it would make sense to do a little behind-the-scenes podcast together! If you don’t already know, Steve is my husband! He and I actually came up with the Social with Lisa Podcast idea together and I’ve been so blessed to have him to help me since he works in IT. In order for you to get to know Steve a bit better, he has answered some questions you can find below:

WHAT DID HE THINK WHEN I TOLD HIM I WANTED TO START AN INSTAGRAM DECOR ACCOUNT WHEN WE LIVED IN DALLAS, TX?
Steve’s first thought was… well, this will be fun! He thought it would be an excellent outlet for me because I’ve always decorated and designed the homes we’ve had. He thought that I would be good at sharing my passion for home decor with others as a way for me to do something that I love. It was a new city, and we didn’t really know anyone, so Steve truly supported me when I told him I wanted to start my own account. We never thought we would end up where we are now!
I’ve touched on this before, but I became pretty lonely and depressed when we lived in Dallas because we left pretty much everything behind, including family. I was alone all day while Steve was at work, which is another reason I needed something to do!
DID STEVE NOTICE A CHANGE IN MY MENTAL STATE AFTER STARTING MY ACCOUNT?
Steve says he definitely noticed a positive change after starting my home decor account. Though I was swamped, Steve said he could see that this community and page made me happy. Helping other people and giving others tips has always been something I’ve loved doing with my account, so Steve definitely saw how this avenue lead to a more positive mindset.
WHEN DID STEVE REALIZE HOW MUCH WORK I WAS PUTTING INTO MY PAGE?
Steve would go to work and come home to see the entire house rearranged or different projects everywhere. Though he is in IT, he isn’t really on social media, so he didn’t understand how much work it takes to run a social account. In the first video shoot that Steve did (a spring patio), he said he had absolutely no idea how much work it was – light rings, cables without tags showing, watching for shadows, and so on.
HOW DID STEVE LEARN TO BE SO HANDY?
Steve’s dad was actually a handyman – always doing things around the house, taking things apart, and putting them back together. He grew up helping his dad in the shop and garage.
Naturally, when you get into your own home, you want it to be better. We painted our first starter home multiple times and did so many projects around the house to make it better.
DOES STEVE HAVE FUN WITH MY DIY IDEAS?
Steve says he’s always down to do these projects with me. He is always up for building things. However, the first few projects, he says I was really in his business about it! “do this, do that,” and he really just wanted to figure it out himself! I will admit, I am a micromanager. When he started doing the bookshelf project, I knew he could do it. I let him do all of that project himself without any “help” or “guidance” from me.
WHAT WAS STEVE’S ROLE IN CREATING THE PODCAST AND COURSES?
Steve admits that the social media courses took a very, very long time. He knows tech, and he knows the platform. However, the actual effort to create course content is super time-consuming and a lot of work. There are actually lots of other versions that didn’t even go live on the site! Even though we made tons of PowerPoint presentations and content creation, we didn’t end up using some of them. Steve comes from the business/IT/tech world, and I come from a creative world, so sometimes we were back and forth about the content. Steve says it’s more about function for him, and for me, it’s more about things being “pretty” and how things look.
