Home staging helps, but not for the reason most people think. Home staging works because it makes a home photograph better, and better photos mean more showings. Almost everything in a sale traces back to how many people walk through the door.
Why does home staging work?
Buyers see your home online before they see it in person, and they decide in a couple of seconds whether to keep scrolling.
A staged room reads clearly in a photo. One purpose, a clear traffic path, furniture at a sensible scale, surfaces mostly clear. An unstaged room photographs as visual noise, and visual noise gets scrolled past.
That is the whole mechanism. Photos drive showings. Showings drive offers.

Do I have to hire a professional stager?
Usually not.
Most homes I work with need editing, not rented furniture. That means removing roughly half of what is in each room, pulling personal photos, clearing counters down to one or two objects, and rearranging so the purpose of each room is obvious the moment you walk in.
Empty homes are the exception. An empty room is hard to read and looks smaller in photos than it actually is. There, rented pieces genuinely help.
What are the highest impact home staging changes I can make myself?
Take out half the furniture. Nearly every room improves. Rooms look bigger with less in them, which is the opposite of what most people expect.
Clear the surfaces. Counters, dressers, the top of the refrigerator. This single change transforms photos.
Make the lighting consistent. Use the same bulb temperature throughout. Mixed warm and cool bulbs make photos look strange and nobody can ever say why.
Give every room one job. A room that is part office, part guest room, and part storage confuses a buyer. Pick the story you want it to tell.
Depersonalize, but do not sterilize. Family photos come down. A home with zero personality photographs cold. You want it to feel like a home somebody could love, not a showroom.

Does home staging actually change the price?
It changes how many people see your home and how quickly, more reliably than it changes the number itself. A staged home tends to draw more interest early, and early interest is where the best offers come from.
I would not promise you a specific dollar increase. Anyone who does is guessing.
What if I want to do this room by room?
That is exactly how I would approach it, and it is why I built The Room Redesign Planner. It walks you through one room at a time, from setting your goals all the way to sourcing, so you are not trying to fix a whole house in a weekend.
